Pair of Painted Retablos
Pair of Andean Retablos. Circa 1750-1820. The smaller of the two has mirrors on the rondels on the frame. Size – 9 1/2″ x 13″ and 10″ x 15 1/2″.
The imagery is really unusual, but appears to be related to the Virgin Of The Immaculate Conception, or The Virgin Of The Apocalypse. My guess is that it is very provincial Andean, Peru or Bolivia. Often times these primitive kind of images are painted in Tempera type paints over locally made gesso. The style of the frame is very Andean. These are often made of light wood sometime enhanced with corn paste.
