Leather Jaguar Mask

Leather Jaguar Mask

$750.00

Leather Jaguar Mask “Tigre” circa 1920 from  Zitlala, Guerrero, Mexico.

Height – 11″ Width – 9″ Depth – 7 1/2″.

This mask was worn in the Feast of the Holy Cross (Santa Cruz). Men dressed up like jaguars to celebrate the fiesta with ritual fights. I purchased this mask from an estate here in Tucson. The owner said this mask as well as other ethnographic items came with the house when he purchased it. The original owner was a scholarly man from Scotland who was a collector who returned to Scotland, became ill and never returned, so the house was sold with the entire contents. This mask shows lots of patina from extensive use.
